How we calculate

  1. Net panel length = total run − (gates × gate width).
  2. Panels = ceil(net ÷ panel width). Always round up.
  3. Posts = panels + 1, plus 2 posts per gate, plus any extras you enter.
  4. Caps = total posts when enabled.

Example: 100 ft, one 4-ft gate, 8-ft panels → net 96 ft → 12 panels, 15 posts, 15 caps.

Does not size post diameter, hole depth, concrete volume, or permits. Prefab panel sections only (not board-by-board picket math).

FAQ

How many posts for 100 feet? With 8-ft panels and one 4-ft gate: 15 posts (see example above).

6-ft vs 8-ft panels? Wider panels mean fewer posts and faster install, but each panel is heavier.

Do I need concrete? Often yes for wood/vinyl posts — follow the post and local frost-line guidance; this tool does not estimate bags yet.

Why round up panels? A partial bay still needs a full panel to cut down. Order extras if your line is uneven.

Estimates only. Measure your property line carefully; call 811 before digging; follow manufacturer instructions and local code.
